What is AI?AI has now become a household name, but what does it actually mean for the average person?Artificial Intelligence, in simple terms, can be understood using analogies. For instance, we all know what an artificial flower is; it possesses the qualities of a flower but isn't an actual flower. Similarly, you can think of AI as possessing the qualities of intelligence but not being actual intelligence. In technical terms, AI refers to a machine's ability to mimic human intelligence. It's as simple as that.Continuing with the flower analogy, if an artificial flower is made of paper, we can say it is a weak flower. If it's made of plastic, we can say it is a strong flower. And if it is made of high-quality material, with all the components of a flower like peduncle, receptacle, sepals, petals, and reproductive organs, plus the scent, then we can say that it closely resembles an actual flower. Similarly, we classify AI into Narrow, Strong, and Super categories.
- Narrow or Weak AI (ANI): This represents AI that can perform very basic decision-making functions, such as smart speakers (Siri), self-driving cars, and web search.
- Generative AI: A subtype of narrow AI which is capable of creating content, like images, songs, videos, etc., that closely resembles human-generated content. Examples include ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, and DALL-E.
- Strong or General AI (AGI): This represents AI that can make decisions like humans. We haven't come close to achieving this level of AI yet, but there are questions about its consequences for us.
- "It's not a well-defined phrase; it means different things to different people. But I think if you define AGI as AI becoming capable across a wide variety of economic activity and being able to do it well, I think that's one way to look at it." - Google CEO Sundar Pichai [R1]
- Super AI: This represents AI that can surpass human capabilities. It's currently a distant dream.
